Mark McVeigh - AFL Mark of the year 2007 - Round
3
The mark of the week for
round three was won by Essendon's Mark
McVeigh. McVeigh's soaring grab over Carlton's
Bret Thornton was a controversial test
of the AFL's in the back rule that has
been heavily imposed this season. Umpiring
boss Jeff Gieschen said McVeigh's mark
had been "ticked off" after a thorough
video review.
"When we went through it frame by frame and looked at it, it's a clear mark to
Mark McVeigh. There was a bit of contact to the upper region of the shoulders,
but it happened so quickly.
"In slowing it down this morning, we found it was about three-100ths of a second
where his hands momentarily touched the shoulders.
"The bottom line was McVeigh was legitimately trying to mark the ball."
Bret Thornton, the Carlton defender, said he barely
felt contact.
"I couldn't say I did. Not at all. It is what the crowd comes to see," Thornton
said.
