For each round of the 2003 AFL Football
season, the AFL selected the best three marks as
nominees for the AFL Mark of the Week. A panel
of AFL All-Australian selectors then choose the
winning Mark of the round. At the end of the AFL
season, one Mark of the Round was selected
as the official AFL Mark of the Year.
2003 MARK OF THE YEAR - Chris Tarrant
CONGRATULATIONS
TO Chris Tarrant, WINNER IN 2003
Collingwood's Chris Tarrant has
been officially named as the winner of the
2003 AFL Mark of the Year.
In the Round 18 match between Geelong and
Collingwood, Tarrant leapt high and stood
on the shoulders of a pack of players in
the Collingwood goalsquare to take a spectacular
chest mark.
CONFUSION OVER
MARK OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCEMENT?
Although the official AFL mark
of the year was announced at the All Australian
dinner on 09/09, The
Age newspaper had already given
their vote to Collingwood's Chris Tarrant.
In the first of a series of souvenir posters,
The Age on Saturday 06/09 provided
a poster of Chris Tarrant's mark against
Geelong in Round 18. The poster was labeled
with "Mark of the Year, August 2, 2003".
A spokesperson on The Age feedback
line said, "This is just the name we
are giving it (the mark)" and confirmed
that this was not an announcement of the
official AFL award.
